My Songs Is Not For Commercial Purpose- Charly Boy
Bearly a week back, the former President of Musicians’
Association of Nigeria Charles Oputa fondly known as
Charly Boy unleashed his sixth album. It is a surprise
that the veteran musician can still come to the game
when majority of his mates are signing off the stage.
Tijani Adegbola reports his come back.
New Music Concept
For almost a decade of what described as sabbatical,Charly Boy , one of Nigeria’s most feted personality brands, returned to the musical scene as he dropped his sixth album titled Area Fada.Area Fada contains nine tracks of different versions
of music ranging from hip hop , poetry contemporary ,high life and afro beat with all the tracks findings. From the graphics, to the bikes, urban dance steps and beautiful script, the video has been tagged on to give African artistes a run for their creativity and innovation.
“First of all, I did this album just to prove to myself that I can do it . These have always been the things I’m doing and that’s why I got into the business in the first place. Then, to give people who have seen Charly Boy evolve through the years over the
past 25 years, a run for their money”, he said. complementing one another and underscoring the essence of the Charly Boy’s brand. The tracks which are currently enjoying generous airplay and getting crazy rave on the air waves are Ninja Bike and Nwata Miss .Ninja Bike video is currently on international and Nigerian T V music channels. The feedback has been
tremendous according to our Sparking Up
His Controversial Character
Everybody has his own character. The unique selling point of Charly Boy is to be different from other people. Though, some people acclaimed that he is the most controversial artiste on the Nigerian music scene due to his performances while at the helm of affairs in PMAN. This has actually reflected in his new song which he titled Dey Wan Be Me. This is one track,
Charly Boy sparked up his controversial character singing that malicious imitators want desperately to be like him ignoring the thorns that has bruised his journey to greatness.
“No, they should find their own path. I keep saying it is always greener at the other side. They should also understand that being Charly Boy is not about the Razzmatazz, it also comes with its pains; it comes with its struggles; it comes with its goofs and its failures. The track is just to say that being Charly
Boy is not an easy path to travel. And , then , the only thing , like I keep saying , that has been the brand through is that the brand keeps impacting on the younger people choice for determination. I mean to be stubborn about what their dreams are about. I have proven that it can be done and I’m saying to them, ‘Let no one kill your dream”, he added.
Charly Boy Revolution
Corporate organizations and some individuals who tested the revolutionary of Charly Boy often wonder why he chooses to adopt an area boy attitude. The lyrics and verses of Street University- a poetry track- provides useful answers.
“When I’m chasing something, I’m determined, and I’m aggressive about it. I don’t see obstacles on the road. If I see one, I bulldoze my way through or walk my way around it. And that’s the area boy way as it’s understood by the street- they are aggressive when they do things. But I’m not talking about that kind of area boy. I’m talking about an intellectual area boy
takes the same militant approach to whatever they choose; whatever their goals are. That is what the track, and the album is about”, Charly Boy stressed “It is more moral than commercial. It‘s more about the philosophy. It is more about the message that has continued through the years- how to be yourself. If it becomes a commercial success, it will be a bonus for me, but I’m just doing it because I have put my mind
into it and I want to see it to its logical conclusion. And I’m elated about it. This is going to make me happy for a while before I think of something else to do. Then I’ll like to do shows again. These are the kind of things I left for a while. I’ll dust it up and pick where I stopped and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m prepared to do as many as possible. I’ve a video that at least is at par with the album”.
Ninja Bike is fast becoming Area Fada’s hit track;
giving Charly Boy good reasons to be proud of grand
come back.
“Nobody has ever done a song on his dog, or his car, but I’ve done one on my bike. I don’t know may be because we have that relationship, you know men and steel equal freedom. Then, the success story of the Ninja Bike video is the fact that a lot of talented people worked on it. It is one thing to just conceive an idea. It is another thing to work with people who
can also bring their own zest to that idea. And yes, it is good to know what you want but you must also understand that before what you want will materialize in the bigger picture. You have to work around it with like minds. People who can also see what you see. The video that has great stars like Sound Sultan, Asha, Spiderman and others have been described as perfect jobs. “My greatest privilege shooting the video was to work very young people who were dynamic. People that are technically correct and sound. It was almost near a perfect job. And I’m very happy that in the course of this, I have met a lot of great Nigerian young talents in different areas. And that is one of the
things I’m happy about”, Charly Boy concluded.
Charly Boy, who is commonly known in Nigeria, came into being after his educational sojourn in the United States of America where he bagged an Honours degree in Speech Communication and Masters Degree in Mass Communication
