The struggle to ward off piracy in the music industry by PMAN took a new face with the serial accusation of artistes targeted at a particular marketer by the name  T-Joe who has been accused of defaulting contract agreements and related copyright ethics. Some of the
affected artistes on hand in company of T-Mark, the president of PMAN, took a protest walk to the
Allen Avenue
den of T-Joe, the marketer in question. He was however not available to give his own side of the story to calm down the frayed nerves of his august visitors, possibly for obvious reasons. Below are the shrapnel of the verbal outburst as it pours at T-Joe’s
frontage.

Giving explanation to a question directed at him, T-Mark claims that the sale of most CDs is fraud and that the umbrella body he represents is against fraud, which stagnates the growth of the industry. He urged marketers to see it a point of duty to declare  artistes the actual number of CDs printed and how many are sold, and that an artiste deserves to be paid for  his intellectual property. He further spoke on the world body of all the musician union that PMAN has joined tagged FIM, “Federacion Internacional de musician”, which should be contacted for any musical contract. He also warned artistes to stop signing ridiculous contracts with crooked markers, “if you want to sign a record contract don’t sign any nonsense
come and pick up the internationally accepted contract form and you can even come and speak to our lawyers for legal advice. Too many artistes are signing ridiculous contracts out of desperation. It is better to have no CD in the market than a CD which makes you no money”.

When asked who   T-Joe , the marketer in  question is T-Mark explained that he is a marketer which PMAN has received complaints by artistes that either he gives them  cheques  which bounce or he tells them that their CDs didn’t sell. He said the protest is war against pirates and crooked marketers and that one can be a marketer and make his money in a honest way.
In his own take on the issue in hand, the erstwhile president of PMAN, Bolaji ROsiji, said, they are right here at the house of one of the pirates who claims to be representing the artistes but shortchanging them. “We’re gonna match to your house, we’re gonna apply the 80-20 principle and pick up
2-3-4
of you big guys believe me, we’re coming to get you”. He advices
artistes to link up with T-Mark to get proper contract from him where they could link up with a proper marketing person for a good deal.

Also speaking,  piracy stating that people need to be enlightened; the Nigerian audience, fans and young artistes who are actually joining the industry.Responding to why artistes take their intellectual properties in desperation to marketers like T-Joe,2-Shots said, “we’re actually using these medium to enlighten artistes. Before you do that, make sure that your facts are right. We artistes that are here actually have signed contracts faulted by this very guy. It is not like we’re just marching to say we need contract. We’ve our lawyers around and we’ve debt only on one person. We’re using this medium to   say we need our money back”.Clad as usual in his peculiar regalia but with an additional base ball stick, probably to signify war
against pirates and bootleggers is Charly Boy who is equally a former president of PMAN, another artiste at the mercy of this imaginary T-Joe. His presence attracted quite a number of bike riders that were very helpful in this famous protest march against pirates.

When asked if the protest will not make marketers to be more monstrous with unethical practices he said,“I’m just hoping that this move will unite the artistes, first and foremost, and for them to know that we have a common enemy, a common problem and we’re using this move to set an example with a marketer, that you can’t continue to do business as usual.

What are we asking for? We are asking for just that simple courtesy that if you’re using our work, you must pay. Everywhere else in the world you pay for what you use. It shouldn’t be any different. So we’re using this opportunity to send signals to the marketers that we will not tolerate this monkey business any more. And then you know Charly Boy is involved in this matter. So, I’m happy. Once again I’m getting my groove.” Explaining his ordeal in the hands
of T-Joe Charly Boy said, “He took my masters, we signed a contract. It was a one-off deal. He’s supposed to pay me a certain amount a month after he took this master tape. He took this master tape as far back as MARCH last year and a month after he was supposed to pay me some money. Till today, he hasn’t paid that money. He’s released the records and the
CDs, and everybody knows that when I did my promo CD,Ninja Bike, it was more effective than what he is doing. So, he’s taking the CD, taking the masters, released it, I don’t see any money and it’s not just me. I wouldn’t like this to sound like a personal thing. More than eight people; ask 2-Shots; ask Lord of Ajasa; ask Nigger Raw; even P-square and D’banj,Asha and others.  They’ve all been a victim of this particular marketer and it is wrong. So,somebody’s got to do something, and we’re just starting on a very…you know…make e be like say we be
gentleman”.  The pendulum of tirade soon swings over to the self-styled small statured lyrical giant called Lord of Ajasa who already has a court case pending with the marketer in question. Expressing himself Ajasa said, “That man na wa for am o. Se na him house be dis.M-e-n… m-e-n…this is what I know. Na music I de take chop. It takes a lot of hard work to come out with this. I’ve spent my money and everything. Now giving it to a marketer and not even returning anything and you’re selling. My song is all over, all over the town”. Giving the reason why he was at the scene he said, “Na this guy wey we de fight for here now. Him name na T-Joe now. I believe say the guy go dey nice to me now. I no no, I no no m-e-n, and I’ve been
keeping it cool with him for a very long time and its like, ok, you’re a mugu let me use your head. M-e-n for this
Lagos
, e no set m-e-n. I be town boy now. Let me tell you something, my fans are already paranoid now. It’s just me that is saying ok guys don’t do anything stupid. Do you understand what I’m trying to say? Guys are not smiling outside now. You’re selling
my work and you’re not giving me my money. Ajasa’s grievance was that T-Joe has refused to pay him the sum of #2.5M marketing contract agreement they signed,“ He’s supposed to give me my money and he has not giving it to me as planned. The money is #2.5M. He
said he will send the money to me through my manager, my lawyer, and since then my lawyer has been taking some actions.  When I heard that Charly Boy and 2-shots are fighting this, I had to join the group because it is not right. I need my money. Tell T-Joe to give me my money”. Explaining why he chose to dine with this peculiar marketer he’s heard so much about Ajasa opines that, “ I’ve heard a lot about him. I thought he’s supposed to be a good guy, you know.Marketing P-square and all that, I thought he can do my own. He’s not leaving up to expectation at all.

After the outburst of Ajasa comes the reprimand of artistes by Felix Duke whose observation was on the low turn out of artistes in this holy war against racketeering marketers in the terrain of Nigerian  music industry. His tirade was rather directed inward to erring artistes in the industry, “we want to use this medium to talk to our other colleagues in the business. It’s very very sad and it’s bad. It’s like if you look at it, we’re the ones killing ourselves. We backstab ourselves. How do we want the industry to grow if we’re not coming together as one? I said something before now that  na corporation rice take full cup. When we’re not together there is a problem.A house that is not united will definitely have a problem. When they call on other musicians for a thing like this, I think we all have believe in this cause, believe in this career. I don’t have any other job that I’m doing. I’ve been playing music all my life.
Except some of them have something they’re doing. I don’t know why a call like this will come and they will not come. I noticed something sometime ago when an agreement was made. Some went behind to say all kinds of things and its not nice. It’s killing the industry! We should stop so that the industry can grow. We’ve those bad eggs amongst us. They should change and we all should come together and push this industry, push the Nigerian music industry forward. We don’t have any other industry”. Nevertheless, all efforts to reach T-Joe proved
abortive as all his phones were switched off at the time of this report.
